Location

Portland is a perfect place to stay and base yourself after driving the 400 or so kilometres via the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. Being the mostl westerly Victorian coastal town, it is also ideally located if you intend to explore South Australia or Western Victoria.

Portland is the most westerly of Victoria's major coastal towns and the only deep-water port between Melbourne and Adelaide. It was also the first permanent settlement in Victoria, founded in 1834 by the Hentys. The township, which features many National Trust–classified buildings, overlooks Portland Bay.

The city has a current population of around
12,000. Portland features many historic buildings and short stretches of beach fronting safe still waters, ideal for family recreation. Portland Bay is ideal for boating, fishing and sailboarding and there are many fine surfing spots in the area. The district is also profuse with outstanding natural attractions.

  • a foreshore carnival in January.
  • a fishing competition in February.
  • the Dahlia Festival in March.
  • a jazz festival and Pioneer Week in November.
  • a surfboat marathon in December.

Portland is 362 kilometres west of Melbourne.
Travel by car via the Great Ocean Road, the Princes Highway or the Henty Highway.
Daily rail and coach services are available from Melbourne. Daily air flights are available from Melbourne Airport.
